2 World Wars and 1 World Cup

Things we, as Americans, entered late and then kicked ass at!

In all seriousness, there are problematic things with soccer – soccer as a business, the effects of the tournaments on their host countries, how sports are used and consumed in the larger culture – that should not be ignored, and there are some great analyses of those on the internet right now.

That said, I will be watching USA-England Saturday. I will be rooting for the US, because I live here, because I’d like if we had a functional soccer league, because I’m sick of hearing England fans go on and on about how they won in ’66, and because a little tribalism now and again might just be good for the soul. It’s not, perhaps, the healthiest thing, but it is incredibly satisfying.
